Social Media: Conferences and Keeping it Fresh

by Lisa on August 4, 2010

Social media. It seems like it’s at the top of everyone’s list these days. In my experience, I have run across “twitter experts” with two followers that refuse to follow back “due to their expertise”. And then there are the people I consider to be true guru’s of social media who are using it for what it’s really for: building community, allowing creation and exchanging valuable content and information.

When I think of social media and what I would like to learn, it’s actually kind of tough to look at what I would like or need to learn. I have been “connected” socially since 1996, met my husband in a chat room in 1998 and began blogging in 2002. Back then everything was rudimentary and I was an uber-nerd of the online world. Picture a Star Trek fan living in his parents basement at 40, except I was 22 and pounding the keys in my office and mom’s house.  The thing is I’ve been to social media conferences where the dialogue was elementary. I’ve sat through panel on Twitter 101. I want a more advanced curriculum. I’m ready to dive in deeper and discovering new ways to keep things fresh, relevant and flowing.

Life long learning is what I have committed myself to. So for me, I would love to learn more about social media analytics. Measuring what I am doing. Evaluating the potential reach and quantifying data, that’s relevance to me. I also want to know what others are challenged with. The contacts I make at Social Fresh are just as important as the seminars I sit in.

That’s probably why I am excited about the 2nd annual Social Fresh social media conference  in Charlotte. Attending Social Fresh would allow you to introduce me to new thinking. Fresh ideas that will add new dimensions to what I’ve been doing forever. With the keynote by Amber Naslund on the real-time revolution, Wayne Sutton with web-marketing, and monitoring and managing through the social media lifestyle, it’s a boon in my book and I can add to my expansive knowledge base.

It’s going to be the highlight of social media events this year in our region and we are lucky that it has come full circle to the Queen City again.

    Julie,
They are holding a blogger contest. Write a blog about social media! Look at the @sofresh account on twitter and get the info for the free ticket. Go the page, follow the guidelines and you are done! It’s a $400 ticket and well worth the money.

I haven’t been to Social Fresh yet (any of them), but have heard it’s a great one to get to. On my list (as if my list isn’t long enough!).

Btw, I am the voice behind http://www.BlogConferenceNewbie.com, the go-to-guide for blog & social media conferences. Which other conferences on the list have you been to or plan on attending?

    Have a great weekend…
