Self-Care and the Holidays

by Lisa on December 26, 2011

I realize I’ve really been slack about self-care, especially during the Holiday season. My water consumption is down and coffee consumption is astronomical. When I start adding in sugar, too many processed foods and subtracting exercise? Friends, I’m a hot mess.

Sitting here tonight, I’m working on my plans for self-care. No, I’m not waiting for 2012 to roll in, I’m taking action now. Weight Watchers has swiped my credit card, my fridge is ready and my gym membership is no longer stagnant.

Action. That’s what is called for, action.

Writers are a sedentary lot. Not all of us, but there are many of us who don’t leave their desks often enough. I blame the dreams I have of running, wind blowing my flowing blonde locks, as I breathe steady, sweat pouring down my face. Believe me, I’m far from being able to run, but I remember when I did run and I find myself craving that feeling. It’s so intense and I’ll be quite honest, I’m pissed I can’t have that feeling right now.

Mondays are all about self and home around here and I’m all about my self-care. So many women think taking time for themselves is selfish. Believe me, it’s not.

Self-care is a necessity.

If we’re not taking care of ourselves, we’re wasting time. Why do I feel that way? Because, it’s all about maintenance. Kinda like hen you first peel off the winter shoes and get the spring pedicure to prepare for flip-flop season. If you’ve not kept up with that pedicure; your feet look awful and it takes a couple of trips to the pedicure chair to get them into the shape you desire. Kinda like our derrières and swimsuit season.

Why are we working twice as hard and spending twice as long to cram things into a shorter amount of time? Is it what society has ingrained in us and our subconscious? Wouldn’t it be nice to walk into the stores when swimsuits start rolling out in a few weeks and say “I’m ready, so I can try that suit on now!”.

While I’ll be avoiding the actual gym for a while, I’ll be in my yoga classes and walking at the local running trails. As a reminder how important my yoga practice is to me, I’m sharing a photo of my dear friend Amy Bradley-Hole. This photo inspires me and makes me want photos of my practice.

Before that happens? I need major self-care. I’ve let myself down and it’s going to take a lot of time out of my day. Time that I could use for other things (like playing video games). That’s why I’m taking action on my self-care and will be checking in here occasionally as a reminder to you and more importantly, to remind myself.
